DESERT Zaragoza KICK-OFF meeting: Diet and Exercise Strategies for Health Equity in Rural Territories DESERT
PROJECT SUMMARY:
Human service deserts refer to areas lacking essential services like health care, social support, and education due to factors such as geography, resource scarcity, or discrimination. These deserts often coincide with food and physical exercise deserts, where access to healthy food and opportunities for physical activity are limited, leading to heightened risks of chronic diseases. Rural areas, particularly those with inadequate funding and services, face these challenges, which were exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The DESERT project in Europe aims to address these issues by identifying and mapping deserts, promoting health equity, and exploring collaborative strategies with local stakeholders to reduce health disparities.
