IpIBA seminar series 2023/2024 “In vitro hepatic tissue morphogenesis: tackling the critical challenges towards effective generation of bioengineered livers”
Liver transplant is the only current treatment for end-stage chronic liver disease and severe acute liver failure. The development of a bioartificial liver using a decellularized scaffold arises as an alternative to reduce the burden of transplantable livers for patients on waiting lists. In this thesis project, we propose three main objectives to help recreate a functional bioengineered liver: to develop a patent biliary network in decellularized rat liver bioreactors, to define how to shape the 3D tissue architecture of hepatocyte cords, and to define the mechanisms of hepatocyte-cholangiocyte interconnection.
