The gut-microbiome-liver axis during disease«.
There are increasing evidence of the close association between liver disease and intestinal dysfunction that includes drastic changes in the gut microbiome composition and function. Research in my lab aims at understanding the mechanisms mediating the communication between the gut, the microbiome and the liver during health and disease.
We are currently focusing our research on how microbes interact with the immune system as inflammation is essential to control the progression from homeostasis to disease. Also, we are interested in understating how cell metabolism can modulate inflammation and the interactions between the host and the microbiota.
To do this, we use in vivo pre-clinical models in combination with in vitro models, mainly using primary cells isolated from transgenic animals. As part of the translational nature of our work, we also perform analysis of human tissue samples.
Defining the mechanisms mediating how microbes interact with the gut-liver axis and modulate this communication will enable us to propose strategies to preserve health and treat disease
